2024 was a busy year for me. Here is a quick roundup of just some of the things I did and worked on.
March:
Hey, There’s Science In This was published.
I gave a career talk to UCL students.
May:
My second book, Biology: 100 Ideas in 100 Words, was published.
I wrote about music research for Undark
June:
I gave a talk to a crowded pub in London Bridge.
July:
I had a feature article published in the Observer
HTSIT got an honorable mention at the Next Best Read awards.
October:
I was on a panel at the UKCSJ conference:
Other articles and projects
Throughout the year I also wrote several pieces for Forbes. My most viewed article there was the one about citizen science in Borderlands 3.
Some of my articles are meant for more subject-specific audiences. For example, IP firm Mewburn Ellis commissioned this profile of a researcher working on the connection between the liver and the gut microbiome. For the BMJ I wrote about predatory publishing and about patient involvement in medical research. I reviewed the book Third Millennium Thinking for Physics World, and for BOLD I interviewed mathematician Korbinian Moeller. I also wrote a bunch of the sponsored articles for Nature, including this one about mass spectrometry that required a lot of reading because it was years since I last thought about mass spectrometry!
I’ve also worked on some white papers, websites, press releases and grant reviews for different organisations.
All in all, it was a busy year. I’m entering 2025 with a feature article assignment and a half-finished proposal for a new book, so hopefully this year will be equally exciting.
