Communities

Coworking for science communicators

I host weekly coworking session for science communicators and have contributed to a chapter about online coworking for a guidebook on virtual events.

Other community management roles

I regularly serve as chair for BiteSize Bio webinars, where I introduce the speakers and run the live Q&A. As a freelance community manager I also helped manage four communities for Nature Research Communities from 2019 to 2020.

From 2010 to 2018 I worked in various community management roles for publishers and academics. These jobs included a mix of different community management skills: writing for blogs and social media, inviting researchers to contribute to online community pages, managing and growing social media accounts, giving talks, attending conferences, hosting events, identifying existing communities and engaging researchers, writing white papers, and running online ad campaigns. The biggest projects I worked on were The Node and F1000Research (both as full-time employee).

Committees and events

When I was a chemistry student at VU Amsterdam I used to be very active in various committees and I co-organised an international study tour for third year students, several visits to chemical industry in the Netherlands, and a large career fair for all science students at both Amsterdam universities. During my PhD in biochemistry at the University of Toronto I co-instigated SciBarCamp, an unconference for anyone interested in science. I later helped organise two additional SciBarCamp events in Cambridge, UK.
